There are more than half a million people who have the condition, and don’t even know it. Scientists have attributed this global epidemic mainly to various lifestyle factors such as obesity, an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise but new evidence suggests that our environment may also be contributing. Studies show that exposure to common environmental toxins can dramatically increase the risk of developing the disease.
